Meet Carly Stein! Carly is the founder and CEO of Beekeeper’s Naturals, a superfood company dedicated to bringing you healing products from the hive and saving the bees!
After years of wasting time and money trying natural products that didn't work, Carly finally found something with incredible results. In an Italian pharmacy, Carly found bee propolis and used it to successfully heal her chronic tonsillitis. This amazing new substance was her life saver but proved to be incredibly hard to find back home in North America. Naturally, she did what any girl would do and started beekeeping to make it herself.
This hobby turned into a passion and before she knew it she was rushing home from work on a Friday to ditch the pencil skirt and blazer in favor of a beekeeper’s uniform. In her work with the bees, this voracious new beekeeper continued learning about the amazing benefits of the different types of products bees made and felt she just had to share them with the world. Fast forward to today, Beekeeper’s Naturals is the premier bee product brand sold in retailers across North America and helping customers to solve their health problems more naturally. As a certified Benefit Corp. and company with a cause, Beekeeper's Naturals also works to generate awareness about saving the bees by running campaigns and initiatives across the country in order to help educate and raise funds to restore our bee populations. For Carly, after healing and drastically improving her own health with bee products and learning about the important role bees play in our ecosystem, there was no other option, she had to jump head first into entrepreneurship and commit herself to this cause and it’s safe to says she’s still buzzing.
What rocks your bliss?
The bees! I love being out in nature and nothing is quite as peaceful as surrounding yourself with over five hundred thousand insects who sting right? For me this is honestly the case. Despite their stinging reputation, they are actually quite docile. Bees pollinate ⅓ of our food supply (not to mention many of our wildflowers and plant life) and they play an integral role in our ecosystem. Getting past my fears and letting go of any preconceived notions about the bees opened up a world of discovery. When I'm with the bees I'm always learning and I find the hum of the hives totally relaxing.
Describe your perfect day.
On my perfect day I would wake up with some yoga, preferably a power flow or vinyasa style (unless I'm in a place where I have waves in which case I’m going surfing!). After a little movement I would settle down for a superfood boosted breakfast to get me ready for the day. I like to get my metabolism and digestive juices flowing with a warm mug of lemon water, ginger, cayenne pepper, bee propolis and raw honey and follow that with an avo topped with some bee powered and bee pollen for extra protein. Next I would settle in to touch base with my team and get some work done. Letting things pile up tends to pull me out of my free time and keep my mind locked on what I ‘should’ be doing, so even my ideal day includes a few hours of scheduled work in the morning so I can enjoy my play time. Once I’ve put in some work I would get a good hike or some climbing in and then meet a good friend or a new friend for lunch. Then I would get some afternoon solo time at the hives with a propolis matcha latte and a good book. The day would end with a Float session to turn inward and reset.
When do you feel most creative and alive?
There are three things that make me feel completely alive: surfing, rock climbing, and completing a project (or achieving a goal), whether it’s launching a new product, hitting a milestone with my team or best of all hearing about how my products have helped someone's health.
Share a huge goal you are rocking.
After my partner suffered a serious concussion and spent months trying to rehabilitate his brain, it became clear that memory and focus are something that most of us struggle with. Whether it’s ADD or writer's block, we are all looking to boost our brains. This sent me on a mission to create an all natural brain product that not only helped with memory and focus but was holistically good for your brain, can be taken on the reg and produce positive long term effects. Of course this magic elixir had to be all natural and it had to be something that even the most gluten intolerant, paleo, vegetarian, food sensitive person could enjoy freely. After nearly two years of testing, beekeeping and formulating we finally nailed it! Our new product, B.LXR Brain Fuel just launched and nothing feels as good as building something you believe in, have personally benefitted from and know will help others.
If you could get on a plane right now, where are you going?
New Zealand. There is no way this nerd is passing up a visit to the Shire! In addition to my Lord of the Rings obsession, NZ has one of the best climates and most developed beekeeping industries. I would love to get out there and learn from a different group of beekeepers. Plus, I wouldn't mind getting some kickass hikes in while I’m at it.
How do you handle setbacks?
It's not always easy but I try to reframe a setback as an opportunity. Whether it's an opportunity to cut my losses and dedicate more time to something that is working or an opportunity to learn a different way of doing something. The lessons that come out of our missteps are often the most valuable. I try to acknowledge that no one is perfect and not let my shortcomings define who I am or will be. I try to recognize my blind spots, learn from them and then let them go and move forward with a new perspective.
How do you come home to yourself?
I come home to myself by surrounding myself with people who know, love and accept me unconditionally. When you a run a consumer product company that's built on other people’s opinions of what you create, it can be hard to not let other opinions push you in a particular direction. One practice that I find particularly grounding is defining a few core traits that I know I possess and cannot dispute (such as being brave). In turbulent times or when I have to make a tough call I can repeat these values or traits and ask myself if what I’m about to do is in line with them. If it is, I jump in.
What are 3 ways you rock the self LOVE?
Firstly, I meditate which is not easy but critically important to help me improve my self talk. My second act of self love is a form of treating others how I hope to be treated and building authentic connections with people. I try to treat every new person I meet like I already love them. This may sound odd but it allows me to open up to others and break down any barriers they may have giving us both the opportunity to build an honest relationship with a new person. The third thing I do is I workout which I don't always love in the moment but I never regret after the fact.
